DATES: 21 October to 4 November 2024

The Daniel Katz Gallery, Mayfair & Leila Bartell Studio announces a two-week residency by contemporary artist Leila Bartell, known for her
abstract works that draw from classical influences.
During this residency, Bartell will create a new work inspired by Cimon and Iphigenia, a Baroque sculpture by Filipo Parodi from the gallery’s collection.
The Cimon and Iphigenia sculpture, based on a love story from Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron, has been a source of inspiration for many artists, including Frederick Leighton, who portrayed the tale in his 1884 painting exhibited at the Royal Academy.
Bartell, whose practice is deeply informed by the Old Masters, sees this residency as a continuation of her exploration of classical themes.
“Classical artists have always been central to my work,” says Bartell.
“Cimon and Iphigenia allow me to further explore those ideas, combining them with my abstract style.”
Bartell’s residency will focus on the intersection of classical art and modern abstraction, offering a fresh interpretation of a timeless story.
