In the past President, Donald Trump has said he has taken the hydroxychloroquine drug to fight back against coronavirus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said that testing of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for coronavirus has been halted because of safety fears and trials in several countries are being “temporarily” suspended as a precaution.
ICMR’s statement has come against the backdrop of the fear generated by WHO on the use of HCQ.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said today that HCQ use should be continued in preventive treatment for COVID-19 as no major side-effects of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) had been found in studies in India.
We found there were no major side-effects except for nausea, vomiting, palpitation occasionally. Hence, in our advisory, we have recommended that it should be continued for prophylaxis as there is no harm. A benefit may be there,” ICMR Director-General Balram Bhargava said.
He added “it had been clearly advised that HCQ should be taken with food, not on empty stomach”.
“We also laid emphasis that one ECG should be done during the treatment. We expanded the use of HCQ from healthcare workers to frontline workers also, considering the potential benefits,” he added. Bhargava was addressing a press conference on the COVID-19 situation in India.
It seems that President Trump right again in his assessment on the use of HCQ as ICMR confirmed that HCQ can be used as preventive Coronavirus Treatment.
President Trump has also accused the WHO of biasedness in favor of China and considerable delays in reporting the COVID 19 epidemic.
